Increasing Breast Milk Supply.

You finally came to the decision to breast feed your child. You want to make sure that you give your baby the best start you believe you can by providing your baby with nourishing, life sustaining breast milk. The problem is, your breasts are not cooperating and you are in fear that your baby is not getting enough food. How do you increase your milk supply? Here are a few tips to help you provide more breast milk for your baby and ensure that she is getting the food that she needs to grow into a healthy child.

First, start by increasing the amount of times you feed your baby each day. Encouraging your baby to nurse often will get your breast milk flowing. As milk leaves the breasts, new milk starts to form. The more milk released from your breasts through feedings, the more that they will then produce one again.

If your baby refuses to nurse more often, you can express milk from your breasts either by hand or by using a breast pump. It is not necessary to save expressed milk as your breasts will continue to make more milk for your baby. If you save milk for caregivers to use with a bottle, make sure that you do not let it sit very long.

If during each feeding you are able to drain both of your breasts of milk, the supply will replenish itself quicker. Make sure that your baby drains at least one breast by herself as a baby needs both the first milk out of the breast and the last, more dense hind milk for proper nutrition.

Do not try to rush your baby through a feeding and allow her to eat for as long as it takes. Your baby will stop eating when she is full and should be encouraged to eat until she doesn’t want to eat any more..

Poor latching can lead to your baby sucking really hard but getting very little milk and becoming frustrated. If your baby is properly latched on to your nipple they will be able to eat more and again, your milk supply will flourish to replace what has been eaten.

Vigorous feeding should be encouraged and if your baby is a slow, lazy eater, take away other sucking devices that are used when your baby is not nursing. When your baby only has one

The more your baby feeds, the more milk you will be able to produce for your child. Make sure that both of you are comfortable during feedings and you have enough time set aside for your baby to intake what he wants to. Have patience and soon your baby will be flourishing with the abundance of breast milk you are able to provide for their nourishment.
