What To Do When Baby
Cries.
Unfortunately, crying is a natural
process through which your baby will communicate to you what it
needs or wants. Since babies have no other way to communicate,
they will cry when they are tired, hungry, scared or in pain.
Sometimes they will cry for no apparent reason at all.
If you have a crying infant on your hands, take into
consideration the following possibilities:
• Is your baby hungry? Even if you feel that your baby just
ate a short while ago, it may be that your baby did not get
enough food at the last
feeding and now needs to eat much earlier than
normal. Try placing the tip of your finger in the baby’s mouth.
If it sucks on your finger vigorously, you should try feeding
your baby yet again.
• Check to make sure that your baby is not tightly bound by any
uncomfortable clothing. Sometimes something as simple as a
string from a sock can get wrapped around a toe and cause your
baby discomfort.
• Check the diaper next. Some babies are very sensitive to wet
diapers, even when using diapers that quickly wick away
moisture. If your baby is clean and dry, the diaper is not the
answer.
• Try soothing your baby with rocking motions. Some babies calm
down by the sound of a fan or running water. If your baby has
trouble calming down, try running a fan or noise machine and
see if this helps. The sound from a noise machine mimics the
sounds from inside the womb and babies are often comforted by
this noise.
• Your baby may be teething. If your baby is more than three
months old, has been drooling more excessively and has been
chewing more on toys, it is likely that your baby has started
the process of teething and is having pain from this.
• The temperature in the room may be too hot or too cold.
Babies like warmer temperatures, but being too hot can cause
your young child to be cranky and uncomfortable. Make sure that
the room your baby is in is well ventilated and free from any
harsh breezes or fluctuations in temperature.
If your baby remains inconsolable, despite your efforts, check
its temperature to see if it is running a fever. Feel the
forehead with the back of your hand to see if it feels warm.
Look for signs that your baby is listless or unable to calm
down at all while crying. If you are concerned for any reason,
call your doctor. Pediatricians expect calls from parents,
especially new mothers who have an infant home for the first
time. No questions are ridiculous when it comes to the health
and well being of your child.
