Finding the Right Clothing for Your
Baby
The right clothing on your new baby will
not only keep your baby safe from the elements, but will allow
for free movement and ease of care for you as the new mother.
You don’t have to spend a bundle on stylish clothes, it is only
important to pay attention to size, material and safety to
ensure that your baby is wearing the right clothes for their
needs.
First, consider the material that the clothes are made out of.
Scratchy materials such as wool may keep your baby warm but
they are likely too irritating to your baby’s skin. Although
that wool sweater may look adorable, it is not the most
reasonable purchase for your baby. Consider cotton, which is
more breathable, or flannel, which is very warm, instead of
wool for sweaters.
Second, remember that babies have a harder time staying warm
than adults. A baby will need more clothing than an adult in
order to stay warm in cooler weather. In reverse, if it is very
warm out, make sure that your baby is not wrapped up too
tightly because a baby will get too warm very quickly. The
right clothes will provide appropriate temperature regulation
for your baby without making it either too hot or too cold.
Most baby clothes are safe, especially those made by a
manufacturer, but sometimes a homemade outfit with all the best
intentions can be dangerous to your newborn baby. Check for
buttons that may be easily removed or swallowed and look for
rips or tears from second hand clothing.
Third, consider the size of your baby and put clothes on your
baby that fit appropriately. Clothing that is too small can be
too constrictive and clothing that is too large may cause your
baby to get tangled up in the clothing. Although it may be
appealing to purchase clothing a bit too big because they grow
out of their clothes so fast, babies should have clothing that
fit them properly.
Lastly, always keep in mind the comfort of your baby. Clothing
that is light colored is good for summer months when the
weather gets too hot. Make sure that clothing is soft enough
and feels comfortable on the skin. Use layering in cold weather
so that if you go from outdoors to indoors you can remove
clothing as necessary.
Clothing that allows easy access to your baby in order to
change their diaper will greatly benefit the new, busy mother.
Look for clothing with snaps in the diaper area and avoid one
piece outfits that do not allow for this access. Changing a
baby without having to completely undress the infant will make
it easier on the mother and keep your baby as comfortable as
possible.
